A goal scored in each half gave England’s Lionesses a 2-0 win over Ghana’s Black Queens in an international friendly match played at St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton Tuesday.
The first goal was scored by Lucia Kendall and it came as early as the 5th minute while the second goal, scored by Alessia Russo, came as late as in stoppage time. It was a penalty.
The European champions had thrashed China 8-0 coming into Tuesday’s game.
With Southampton academy graduate Kendall hitting the back of the net that early, fans thought it was going to end in a goal fest.
However, the Black Queens regained their composure to hold the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup finalists.
England’s attackers hit the woodwork four times before the second goal came.
Goal scorers Kendall and Russo as well as Aggie Beever-Jones and Lucy Bronze had their efforts striking the woodwork.
It was a game to wrap up the year for both sides.
Ghana will await their opponents for next year’s WAFCON, which also serves as qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, while England have Ukraine and Iceland to prepare for in the World Cup qualification campaign.
