Daniel Duncan-Williams, son of Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has publicly shared details of his personal struggles and recovery journey, seeking to address what he describes as widespread misconceptions and negative portrayals of his past.
In a candid reflection, Daniel revealed that he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2016, a mental health condition characterised by intense emotional fluctuations. He explained that his condition was significantly worsened by substance abuse, including the use of marijuana, alcohol and other drugs, which he said formed part of a destructive lifestyle at the time.
He acknowledged that his past behaviour contributed to public perceptions of him but stressed that the period no longer defines who he is today. According to Daniel, the last two to three years marked a turning point in his life, following a deliberate decision to pursue sobriety and personal growth.
He described the challenges of abandoning long-established habits such as substance use, promiscuity and other behaviours he characterised as harmful. While admitting that the process has been difficult, he said he has replaced those habits with healthier routines, including regular exercise, improved nutrition, reading, personal development courses and surrounding himself with people who provide positive influence and guidance.
Daniel emphasised that recovery required daily discipline and conscious choices, rather than overnight change. He said the commitment to sobriety and self-improvement has allowed him to rebuild his life and mental wellbeing, adding that learning to form new habits has been central to his progress.
Addressing the public directly, he appealed for people to let go of past narratives about him, stating that he has learned to value and believe in himself. He credited his father, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, with offering advice that helped shape his mindset, recalling his father’s words encouraging him to live not for external approval but for his own growth and purpose.
“I am not giving up on myself,” he said, underscoring his determination to continue on his current path despite challenges.
Daniel also expressed gratitude to those who have supported him through encouragement and goodwill, noting that such support has been meaningful during his recovery. He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to personal transformation and sharing his story as a message of resilience, self-belief and hope for others facing similar struggles.
