Ghana’s Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has held talks with senior Google executives on leveraging artificial intelligence to improve education outcomes in Ghana and across Africa.
The meeting that was held on Friday, Jan 23, 2026, Hon Iddrisu said the engagement took place on January 23 during the ongoing Generative AI Summit in the United Kingdom, where discussions focused on expanding access to quality education through digital innovation.
The meeting comes amid Google’s growing investment on the continent. In July 2025, the technology firm announced a US$37 million investment in AI research and digital skills development across Africa, including plans to establish an AI Community Center in Accra. The initiative forms part of Google’s broader US$1 billion commitment to Africa’s digital transformation, positioning Ghana as a key regional hub.

Google is currently collaborating with the University of Ghana and the GDI Hub to develop speech recognition and AI tools for Ghanaian languages such as Twi, Ewe and Dagbani, with an emphasis on non-standard speech to enhance accessibility in education and digital services.
Hon. Iddrisu said he urged Google to include Hausa, a widely spoken language across Ghana and West Africa, to deepen regional inclusion.
He added that Google’s Director of Operations for Africa and the Gemini lead had assured him that Google’s education tools would be deployed in Ghana on a zero-rated basis, ensuring free access to curriculum-aligned content and responsible AI resources for learners nationwide.
