As NPP Appointees Flee Amidst anti-corruption Probes.

In a scene straight out of a political thriller, the former Chief Executive Officer of Ghana’s Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), Edward Nana Yaw Koranteng, was dramatically apprehended at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) on Tuesday, July 29.

Koranteng, apparently unaware he was on a travel watch list, was attempting to flee Ghana while under active investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for alleged corruption and related offenses.

Sources close to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) at KIA confirmed the vigilant officials acted swiftly, taking Koranteng into custody before he could board his flight and slip away from the clutches of justice.

His attempted escape draws unsettling parallels to the controversial departure of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who successfully left the country in January despite also being under the OSP’s microscope for corruption allegations.

Koranteng, a former appointee of ex-President Akufo-Addo, is currently out on OSP enquiry bail – a strong indication that the allegations against him are significant and squarely within the OSP’s mandate to combat graft.

His audacity to attempt to travel without explicit permission from the OSP underscores a potential disregard for the legal process and the gravity of the ongoing probe.

Following the successful airport operation, GIS officials wasted no time in notifying the OSP, who immediately took over custody of the former MIIF boss for further interrogation and action.

While details surrounding the specific nature of Koranteng’s alleged corruption remain under wraps, his placement on an enquiry bail signals a serious case. This development adds another layer to the OSP’s efforts to clamp down on alleged financial misconduct by high-profile officials.

His apprehension comes mere months after the OSP declared former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta a wanted man in February 2025.

Ofori-Atta was declared wanted alongside Koranteng and Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), over suspected acts of corruption.

The former Finance Minister, despite being sought by authorities and with Interpol’s assistance, has yet to make himself available to face the law.

Among the litany of allegations against Ofori-Atta are controversial payments made for the construction of the much-criticized national cathedral project, a personal promise of the former president to God, which now stands abandoned at its foundation stage, serving as an unsightly water collection point in the heart of Accra.

He is also implicated in the dubious Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) deal, a questionable contract between the private firm and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) that allegedly saw millions paid for services already being undertaken by state agencies like the NPA.

The latest arrest at KIA sends a clear, unambiguous message: no one, regardless of their past position or influence, will be allowed to evade justice while under investigation for corruption in Ghana.

The OSP, under the leadership of Kissi Agyebeng, appears resolute in its commitment to holding power accountable and ensuring those suspected of plundering state resources face the full force of the law.
