A/R: Leaders of NDC, UPP incite striking nurses & midwives

Leadership of opposition parties in the Ashanti Region have asked aggrieved registered nurses and midwives to deepen their industrial action.

The registered nurses and midwives Association on Monday laid down their tools in protest against poor conditions of service.

Leaders of United People’s Party (UPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) want the aggrieved nurses to remain on strike until the government adheres to their terms and conditions of service.

Akwasi Addai Odike and Afrifa Yamoa Ponkoh of the UPP and NDC respectively told Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin on the GhanAkoma morning show on Akoma FM that the strike is timely.

Afrifa Yamoah Ponkoh asked the striking medical staff to continue their action until their demands are met.

“The nurses and midwives have been cheated for a long time and I think this is the right time to demand what is due them,” he said.

“They should keep striking until government heeds to their demands”.

Mr. Ponkoh also took a swipe at the Kumasi mayor, Osei Assibey Antwi, for grossly mismanaging the Rattray Park.

“I get worried when I pass through Nhyiaeso and see the recent state of the Rattray Park and its poor management by the KMA boss. The mayor is a poor manager and I can even manage Kumasi better than him. The purpose and focus of former Mayor Kojo Bonsu for putting up the Rattray Park has been thwarted by the Osei Assibey Antwi,” he lamented.

Meanwhile, leader and founder of UPP Kwasi Addai Odike says when voted into power, he will review the country’s transport system to reduce the traffic in major cities.

“When I get the nod to mount the highest office of this land, I will face off all the mini busses from our streets and bring back the bussing system to reduce congestion and traffic within the various Business Central Districts,” he said.
