Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Ocloo, has clarified that owners of structures along the Kpeshie Lagoon were given multiple notices prior to demolition activities aimed at restoring the waterway.
Speaking to journalists, the Minister stressed that the exercise is intended to prevent sand accumulation in the lagoon, a major cause of flooding in surrounding communities. “This is not the first exercise. The second exercise started last year, but we couldn’t continue. They are very much aware that this exercise would take place early this year,” she said.
Hon. Ocloo added that some residents and operators have been using the lagoon to deposit sand and obstruct water flow, contributing to flooding during heavy rains. “If you virtually seal the place, where do you expect the water to flow? We will not tolerate sealing the lagoon. We are looking at the larger picture, not personal interests,” she said.
The Minister further addressed claims from some residents and operators that they had valid permits from previous authorities. She explained that while permits exist, many were issued for illegal sites and the current government has engaged them extensively. “We even asked the MCE to engage the members. This exercise was supposed to begin early January, and from January up to this time, it has been enough for them to move their belongings,” she said.
Hon. Ocloo highlighted that the demolition is part of a broader plan to restore the lagoon to its natural state. “After the demolition, more will come back to take care of the debris, green the place, and start dredging. We are going to open up the lagoon again,” she said.
She cautioned that government will act firmly to protect natural waterways, adding that incidents of obstruction or aggression against officials will not be tolerated. “We received disturbing videos of armed confrontations, including one person critically injured for challenging illegal activities at the lagoon. This cannot continue,” she said.
The Regional Minister reiterated that the cleanup is a legal, well-communicated initiative prioritising public safety, environmental sustainability, and flood prevention in Accra.
