The National Sports Authority has announced its decision to extend to closure of the Accra Sports Stadium for domestic football matches.

In a statement released on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, the NSA said even though the Ghana Football Association has made requests to use the facility, it would not be able to grant the same due to a ”structural audit” currently being undertaken.

”The NSA received the written request from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) late in the afternoon on Friday, 28th March, 2025. Taking into consideration the preparations and other required protocol arrangements that need to be put in place to ensure that we host a successful game, it was practically impossible for the game to take place at the Accra Sports Stadium.”

”However, we have engaged all major stakeholders to evaluate the possibility of hosting any football match at the Accra Sports Stadium. In this regard, the NSA will like to confirm that the Accra Hearts of Oak S.C vs. Nations F.C match will not be played at the Accra Sports Stadium.”

”Furthermore, all other fixtures including the weekend game between Accra Hearts of Oak S.C and Medeama F.C will only be sanctioned after the structural audit which is ongoing, has been completed with recommendations. The Authority will be in a better position to update the general public and stakeholders on when the Stadium on when the stadium can be used for any football related activity.”

Wednesday’s announcement is in furtherance of a closure that has been in effect since September 2024.

A month later, it was open and used for Ghana’s AFCON 2025 Qualifier against Niger but following the conclusion of the qualifying campaign, the NSA closed down the facility for maintenance works on the pitch.

In March 2025, it hosted its first competitive match since the closure when Ghana beat Chad 5-0 on 21st March in a 2026 World Cup Qualifier.

The Stadium was last renovated in 2018, ahead of that year’s Women’s AFCON tournament, which the country hosted.
