A Mahmoud Karhaba goal in the 88th minute gave Egypt a ticket into the semi-final of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.
They beat North African rivals Morocco 1-0 in the last quarter-final match played on Sunday, January 29 at the Stade de Port-Gentil.
The first half had ended 0-0 and with the match heading into extra-time, a stroke of magic was needed from any of the sides to guarantee victory.
It was the Pharaohs who got it.
A goalmouth melee saw Al Ittihad’s Kahraba hitting the ball quicker than his Moroccan marker.
Not even a last minute freekick by Herve Renard’s side will rescue them from exiting the tourney, the last edition which he won in Equatorial Guinea in 2015.
Egypt, who are making a return to the continent’s top-flight national competition after seven years of absence, will play Burkina Faso in the first semi-final match on Wednesday.
That match will be played at the Stade de l’Amitie in Libreville.
