President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that all the casualties in Wednesday dawn’s fatal stampede at the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise were females.
He described the situation as unfortunate, indicating that he has ordered an immediate suspension of the exercise in the Greater Accra Region.
Addressing a gathering in the Ashanti Region, where he moved to immediately after a visit to the 37 Military Hospital, President Mahama explained that the six were walked over after the gates were forced into by the numerous applicants.
He asked for a minute’s silence for the departed.
The military high command is making arrangements to contact families of the deceased.
Meanwhile, 12 are receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital. Five are said to be in critical condition.
GAF has announced that a board of inquiry has been constituted to look into the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.
