Police in Ghana’s Upper East Region have launched an investigation into a deadly armed robbery attack that claimed the life of an officer on duty along the Zebilla–Widnaba road in the Bawku Division.
The Regional Police Command said preliminary findings indicate that two officers travelling towards Zebilla on Sunday, 8 February 2026, encountered a robbery in progress. The suspects reportedly opened fire on the officers, fatally wounding one of them.
A reinforcement team responding to a distress call rushed the injured officer to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His body has been deposited at the hospital mortuary pending preservation and autopsy, authorities said.
Police have not yet released the identity of the deceased officer but confirmed that a special operation is under way to track down those responsible for the attack.
The command urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with investigators by providing credible information that could assist in the arrest of the suspects. Officials stressed that all persons involved would be pursued and brought to justice in accordance with the law.
