The Member of Parliament for Asutifi North Constituency, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, has been invited by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to help investigations into a mob attack of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) team on Saturday, November 1.
After some illegal miners at Bronikrom in the Ahafo Region were arrested by the team led by the Director of Operations, the MP reportedly arrived and demanded the immediate release of the suspects.
According to police preliminary investigations, the entourage of the MP forcibly removed the hand-cuffs of the suspects and chased the NAIMOS team from the scene.
Mr Kwaku Addo is said to have incited a mob numbering about 600 to besiege the Hwidiem Police Station to demand release of seized vehicles and equipment by the NAIMOS team.
The crowd is said to have vandalised the NAIMOS Director’s vehicle, damaged parts of the police station, and threatened to set it ablaze.
It took reinforcement from the Ahafo Regional Police Command to restore law and order.
Mr Kwaku Addo has, therefore, been invited to assist investigations.
Meanwhile, the case has been taken over by the CID headquarters.
This followed a directive by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
