The Northern Region office of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has been attacked by men suspected to be supporters of the ruling party.
TV3’s regional correspondent Zubaida Ismail said the attackers numbered about 20.
They stormed the offices, she reports, and demanded that workers vacated.
Most workers had to take cover at the Northern Regional Directorate of Ghana Education Service (GES), an eye witness said.
Some clients of the National Health Insurance Scheme who were at the regional office were, however, attacked by the miscreants.
But for the timely intervention of the workers of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), staff and clients of the NHIA would have been badly injured, our correspondent reported.
Security has since been beefed up at the offices.
Speaking on TV3‘s Midday Live on Friday, February 3, Mohammed Salam, a district NHIS director, said it was the second time the men have attacked the office.
He said the men are known members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and they first attacked them on January 9, 2017.
A report lodged with the police then resulted in three officers deployed to man the offices daily.
But the officers were not yet at post on Friday morning when the men attacked, he said on phone.
Two service personnel were beaten, Mr Salam narrated, because the men felt they were using their phones to capture the incident.
