Ghana’s coronavirus cases are now 39,075. This is the latest update released by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) on Wednesday, August 5. It came after 574 new cases were confirmed. These follow over 700 cases posted on the Service’s website earlier in the day. From the latest case count, eight persons have died from the virus, increasing the death toll from 191 to 199. The recoveries-cum-discharges are now 35,563. This leaves the active cases for the country at 3,313. The tally for the nation’s capital region, Greater Accra, has increased to over 20,000. Professor of Political Science H B Martinson has revealed that there was no political party called United Party (UP) before 1957, the year Ghana gained independence. He told Alfred Ocansey on the Sunrise show on 3FM Tuesday, August 4, which marked the Founders’ Day celebration, that the claim by some political scientists and researchers that the UP was formed before 1957 is erroneous and should be disregarded. The Bole Magistrate Court, presided over by His Worship Andrew Prince Cudjoe, has remanded spiritualist Hajia Serena Mohammed into police custody. Hajia Serena Mohammed was at the forefront of the lynching of a 90-year-old woman, Akua Denteh, at Kafaba in the East Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region. The incident occurred on Thursday, July 23. The spiritualist is to reappear in court on Thursday, August 20. She was arrested in Yeji on Tuesday after police mounted a manhunt for her. The 22 qualified out of 68 rappers from the four zonal auditions in Effiakuma, Kwesimintsim, Sekondi and Takoradi. Rescue workers in Lebanon are searching for more than a hundred people who are missing after a huge explosion devastated the port area of the capital Beirut on Tuesday. The blast killed at least 100 people and injured more than 4,000 others. The whole city was shaken by the explosion and a mushroom cloud could be seen spreading over the port area. The National Chairman of the ruling political party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of fuelling tension in some polling stations in the Banda Constituency of Bono Region.
