Parliament has by a headcount approved President John Dramani Mahama’s nomination of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the new Chief Justice. Having acted for sometime now, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie will now be sworn in as Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo’s replacement. Member of Parliament for Tano North Dr Gideon Boako has criticised the decision to transfer residents arrested in Hwediem, Ahafo Region, to Kumasi for detention, describing it as “unfair and unjust”. He said the action placed unnecessary hardship on the affected individuals and their families, limiting access to legal representation and family support. The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested a group of armed thugs who were parading as an anti-galamsey task force in the Nyankamam Armoyi Forest within the Aowin Municipality of the Western North Region. The arrest, which took place Wednesday night, followed a three-day unsuccessful operation by NAIMOS personnel in the region. The seven suspects, who claimed to have links with the Aowin Paramount Chief, were reportedly operating with impunity, extorting money from illegal miners and, in effect, encouraging galamsey activities in the area. Four persons have been arrested by officers of the Ghana Police Service in connection with the murder of the Akwamuhene of Tanoso in the Bono East Region. The deceased chief was said to have been destooled but had rejected the decision and engaged the family in multiple litigations. He was later found dead, murdered in cold blood. The suspects arrested after intelligence are Issifu Addae, alias Akwasi Addae, Stephen Gyamfi, Augustine Arhinful and Martha Mansah. Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has expressed heartfelt condolences to bereaved families of six applicants who died after a stampede at El Wak Sports Stadium. They were at the military stadium for their physical screening as part of their potential recruitment into the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
