The Western Regional Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in a joint operation with the Ghana Armed Forces on Thursday, September 10 intercepted four commercial vehicles en route to Takoradi. The vehicles had on board illegal West African nationals who were consequently arrested. According to GIS, intelligence was gathered about illegal activities along the border, leading to the special joint operation. “In all, Thirty-Six (36) ECOWAS nationals were intercepted at different sections of the Elubo-Takoradi road and escorted back to Elubo Border for proper screening and investigations.” The operation was led by Chief Superintendent Joshua Kraku. The Eastern Regional Secretariat of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to launch its own manifesto out of the national manifesto for the 2020 elections. Under the regional manifesto, every constituency and district would have its own manifesto. The region has 33 constituencies and, currently, all the constituencies are printing their manifestos to trumpet the achievements of President Nana Addo Danakwa Akufo-Addo and his government in each of the constituencies in the Region. Eight patients have lost the fight against coronavirus in Ghana. According to the latest update given by Disease Surveillance Department of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) on its website, the deaths have increased from 286 to 294. In the same vein, 167 new cases were reported, taking the total cumulative number of cases to 45,601. The recoveries-cum-discharges are now 44,679. This has seen the active cases also drop to 628. The call by the Country Chief Inspector of the United Bank for Africa (UBA), Chiedu Okonta, has become necessary, due to the increasing cases of fraud recorded in the financial sector. The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has given government up till the end of September to complete the payment of last academic year’s Book and Research Allowances. Two Ghanaian citizens – Deborah Mensah and Maxwell Peter – have been extradited to the United States of America to face charges to do with cyber fraud. Deborah Mensah, 33, is said to have been arrested on January 16, 2020 in Accra but charged in the US “with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, one count of wire fraud, and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, which each carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison”. The Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) has announced that filing of nomination forms for presidential and parliamentary candidates for this year’s general elections will begin on Monday, October 5 to Friday, October 9.
