The 13 members of the Delta Force facing trial for allegedly assaulting a public officer have been slapped with a new charge. Prosecutor ACP Okyere Darko told the KMA Circuit Court Tuesday morning that the Attorney General has asked them to withdraw earlier charges of assaulting a public officer, conspiracy to assault, and causing unlawful damage. He again told the court that the suspects are to be charged for rioting per the AG’s advice. Presiding Judge Mary Senkyire, as a result, struck out all the earlier charges. The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has marked exactly a year after the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) announced the disqualification of 12 presidential candidates from contesting the 2016 elections. Among the initially disqualified candidates was the Party’s candidate, Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom. Former President John Dramani Mahama is already up with his duty as leader of the Ecowas observer mission for Liberia’s presidential elections. Ghana’s former leader was at some polling stations to monitor how the exercise is going on Tuesday. Liberians are going to the polls to choose a successor to Africa’s first elected female president and Nobel Peace laureate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Ex-football star George Weah and Vice-President Joseph Boakai are the main contenders in the race to succeed her. Liberia, founded by freed US slaves in the 19th Century, has not had a smooth transfer of power in 73 years. The Member of Parliament for Assin South Constituency in the Central Region, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, has called on the Mines and Energy Committee in Parliament to take a look at the sporadic siting of fuel and gas stations across the country. The first in a series of trials of more than 6,600 people, accused of being members of militant Islamist group Boko Haram, has opened in Nigeria. The trials are being held in secret by civilian court judges at a military facility in north-central Kainji town. Rights activists say they are concerned about the lack of transparency in what have been described as the biggest terrorism trial in Nigeria’s history.
