Residents of Yilo krobo municipal capital, Somanya have attacked the district police command, vandalised the charge office and burnt down the only patrol vehicle serving the whole district. The attack follows the arrest of the Assembly Member for the Sarweh electoral area, Ebenezer Adamatey Jones Dendenden by the regional police command in Koforidua for questioning. Government has been able to pay only 60 million cedis out of the 130 million cedis monthly payment it promised service providers of the National Health Insurance Scheme across the country. The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) owes service providers 1.2 billion Ghana Cedis but promised to give the service providers a monthly payment of 130 million cedi. Residents of Sumbrungu including the chiefs in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East region have advised the Aviation Minister to continue the abandoned airport project in Sumbrungu or face their wrath. Their demand follows a proposal by the sector minister, recommending a new project site within the same municipality when she visited the region last week. Vehicle owners will from July this year pay a mandatory towing fee during the registering of their vehicles or renewal of roadworthy certificates at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority. The move is to ensure prompt removal of broken down vehicles from the roads, which officials say, contributes 25 per cent of total road accidents in the country. The Shoprite supermarket at the Accra Mall has become an apparent deathtrap to hundreds of customers following the mounting of scaffolds for an ongoing renovation work inside the shop. The Minister of State responsible for Public Procurement, Sarah Adwoa Safo has issued warning to ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to stop terminating government contracts without recourse to her office. She expressed “grave concern” about the increasing reports in the media regarding abrogation of government contracts by MDAs as well as municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs). In a statement issued on May 26, the Minister directed the MDAs and MMDAs “to refer all such questionable contracts to her office for expert and legal advice”.
