Ethiopian opposition politician Yonatan Tesfaye has been found guilty of encouraging terrorism for comments he made on Facebook. He was arrested in December 2015 as a wave of anti-government protests in the Oromia region was gathering momentum. The authorities objected to several posts including one in which he said the government used “force against the people instead of peaceful discussion”. The Kpandai District in the Northern Region recorded thirty-two assault cases in 2016, topping the list of sexual and gender based violence. Abduction and kidnapping came second with 10 cases. Other cases include rape, defilement, abortion, forced marriage and infant abandonment recorded between one and eight cases. The figures were contained in the first-ever sexual and gender-based violence data released by the domestic violence desk at the Kpandai District Police. The Director of Public Relations for the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC), Nana Yaa Jantuah has resigned following recent allegations of financial misappropriation by the leadership of the utilities regulator. Her resignation comes a day after she and the Executive Secretary of the PURC, Samuel Sarpong were invited by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) for interrogations into the allegations. Both management members were detained with reports rife that their passports were seized to prevent them from traveling out of the country. The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has disclosed that the country’s debt, as a percentage of GDP, has declined from the 73 percent recorded last year to about 62.7 percent as at end of last month. The 2017 budget forecasts that total debt to GDP will close the year at 70.9, which makes the latest figure, less than half way into the year, a major decline in the debt levels.
