Government has intensified the curfew hours imposed on Alavanyo and Nkonya townships in the Volta Region, a day after the shooting and killing of a 15-year-old at Alavanyo. Alavanyo and Nkonya have been caught up in a protracted land dispute spanning almost a century with occasional violence attacks that result in death of people from both sides. The Odododiodio Constituency Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Samuel Ofosu, has resigned his position in the party citing unfair treatment by regional executives. The Paramount chief of the Talensi traditional area, Tongraan kugblisong Nanlebegtang, has warned both licensed small scale miners and illegal miners in the area to stop mining with immediate effect. Ghana’s Chief Justice, Justice Georgina Theodora Wood, who retires from the judiciary in June this year, is to be appointed to the Council of State, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has revealed. Her appointment to the Council will be in line with a provision of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, which requires a former Chief Justice to be included in the 25-membership of the Council. Pastors in the country have been urged to allow the use of their pulpits as a platform to combat illegal mining. There has been months of sustained crusade against illegal mining known as galamsey in the country under the auspices of the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry.
