The industrial action by the Ghana Association of Certified Registered Anesthetists has started biting in some health facilities within the Ashanti region. At the Manhyia District Hospital, all surgery related cases have been suspended due to the absence of the anesthetists. A surgeon at the facility, Dr Michael Opoku admitted the strike is taking a toll on healthcare delivery at the facility. Africa’s economies are growing strongly, but growth alone cannot meet the needs of the continent’s poorest citizens, because “nobody eats GDP,” the African Development Bank’s President, Akinwumi Adesina, said as he unveiled the Bank’s flagship economic report. The 2020 African Economic Outlook (AEO) showed that the continent’s economies are growing well, higher than the global average. The report projected a steady rise in growth in Africa from 3.4% in 2019 to 3.9% in 2020 and 4.1% in 2021. According to the report, these figures do not tell the whole story. The Pietermaritzburg High Court has issued a warrant of arrest for South Africa’s former President Jacob Zuma after be missed a scheduled court appearance. Mr Zuma, who has been charged with a string of crimes including corruption, racketeering and money-laundering was expected at the pre-trial hearing on Tuesday but was not present due to bad-health, according to his lawyers.
