President John Dramani Mahama has nominated 23 distinguished individuals to serve as Ghana’s Ambassadors and High Commissioners in various diplomatic missions across the globe.

Among the prominent names on the list are Benjamin Kofi Quashie, Chairman of the NDC Council of Elders in South Africa; Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, a former deputy minister and legislator; Kojo Bonsu, a former Mayor of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly; and Victor Emmanuel Smith, a seasoned diplomat and former Ambassador to the Czech Republic.

The nominations, which were officially communicated to the Council of State in a letter signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, were made in accordance with Article 74 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

The article empowers the President, in consultation with the Council of State, to appoint ambassadors and high commissioners to represent the country abroad.

The letter dated April 2, 2025, but leaked on April 22, had the late Sam Pee Yalley former Ghana’s High Commissioner to India who died on April 6, 2025 as one of the nominees.

According to the letter, the President expressed confidence in the nominees and called on the Council of State to expedite action on the vetting and approval process to enable the swift deployment of the envoys to their respective posts.

Profiles of Notable Nominees

Benjamin Kofi Quashie is a respected entrepreneur and senior figure in the diaspora wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). As Chairman of the NDC Council of Elders in South Africa, he has played a pivotal role in mobilizing support for the party and maintaining strong ties between the Ghanaian diaspora and home-based political processes.

Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed is a former Member of Parliament for Akwatia and served as Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development under the previous Mahama administration. He is well known for his legal acumen and grassroots political engagement.

Victor Emmanuel Smith has held various public service roles, including serving as Ghana’s Ambassador to the Czech Republic and Chief of Staff to the late President John Evans Atta Mills. His return to diplomatic service signals the administration’s emphasis on experience and continuity.

Other nominees include well-known political figures such as former Minister Paul Evans Aidoo, former Kumasi Mayor Kojo Bonsu, and diplomat Sabah Zita Benson. The list also reflects diversity in gender, expertise, and regional representation.

President Mahama’s nominations come at a time when Ghana is seeking to strengthen its international presence and diplomatic relations in the face of evolving global challenges. The ambassadors and high commissioners, once approved, will be instrumental in promoting Ghana’s foreign policy agenda, economic diplomacy, and citizen engagement abroad.
