The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the rescheduling of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) from starting this month to July-August.
A communication from the continent’s football-governing body on Thursday, March 5 announced that the tournament will now begin from Saturday, July 25 to Sunday, August 16.
It adduced that the decision is “to ensure the success of this important women’s competition, in the light of certain unforseen circumstances”.
There have been rife reports earlier of the possible withdrawal of Morocco as hosts of the tournament.
CAF has, however, denied this with the President, Dr Patrice Motsepe, telling journalists last month that everything was on course.
South Africa have offered to serve as hosts with the Sports Minister quoted as saying this will not be the first time they will be called upon to replace a host country.
CAF’s statement on Thursday was, however, silent on this.
It, however, noted: “Preparations for the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON 2026 are underway and all the parties are confident that it will be very successful.”
