The Criminal Investigation Department has opened a formal probe into a viral video in which an American woman, identified as Arianna Naomi Mackey, claims she was kidnapped and robbed in Accra by five masked men she alleged were officers of the Ghana Police Service.
According to a statement issued by the Police CID, preliminary checks showed the video was recorded at a hotel in Accra where Mackey and two companions had been staying. Investigators confirmed that the group checked out on Dec. 5, 2025, the same day the Ghana airport (Kotoka International Airport) records show she departed Ghana.
The Police said they contacted Mackey to assist the investigation, but she claimed she was already outside the country and could not provide the names of the supposed officers or the license plate of the vehicle used in the alleged incident. She also declined to share contact details of a friend she said was present, telling investigators the friend did not wish to be involved.
The CID noted that Mackey later deleted the video from her social media page. Attempts to reach her through WhatsApp calls and messages have been unsuccessful, police said, adding that she eventually blocked investigators.
Authorities say efforts are now underway to seek her cooperation through diplomatic channels.
The statement stressed that the Ghana Police Service considers such allegations serious and remains committed to establishing the facts of the case.
