Filthy rich sand gangs are tearing apart Ghana’s stunning Keta Beach – and it’s claimed bent cops and greedy chiefs are looking the other way

Jaw-dropping photos expose the scandalous scale of illegal sand mining near Dunya, Kedzi and Keta areas, sparking outrage and fury across the communities. Locals are demanding action NOW as their precious coastline is plundered.

The scandal exploded after brave citizen Frieda Yayra Amable blew the whistle on Facebook, posting: “There is a surge in sand winning activities in Keta and its environs. It’s been alleged that some chiefs and police have been compromised.

Her shocking snaps show diggers ripping up the beach, with grubby old Nissan pickups (plates GT 5677 E and GR 4142 E) caught in the act.

The post went viral, with residents confirming the dirty deeds and slamming the alleged cover-up. Fianu Richmond fumed: “I’m not surprised by these allegations. This has been going on for over a decade… some of these cars are owned by chiefs, elders, and even politicians. So, the police have no say.”

Godwin Agbeko linked the ruthless mining directly to the devastating tidal waves smashing coastal homes. He raged: “When tidal wave starts washing the communities away, we run to government for relief and support” – blaming the sand bandits for the misery.

Dunyo Apetorgbor slammed the bare-faced arrogance of the gangs: “The police patrol the same route where these sand trucks pass every day. From the beach, they go through the Zortoglo family cemetery and join the Keta main road. It’s sad.”

Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, finally broke his silence, thanking Frieda for her courage. He promised: “Very well noted with thanks. The necessary actions will be taken.

But will it be enough to stop the gangs and bring the crooked cops and chiefs to justice? The people of Keta are waiting
