One of the key events preceding the annual Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGAMA) has been postponed.

The Nominees Jam, an all-important event that sets the tone for Ghana’s biggest awards scheme, is being postponed following confirmed cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Ghana.

Charterhouse, organisers of the annual VGMA, which is holding its 21st edition this year, announcing the suspension in a press statement Wednesday said it is putting the public’s interest first.

“The Management of Charterhouse, Board of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards and Vodafone, regret to announce the postponement of Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Nominees Jam, originally scheduled to come off at the Jackson Park, Koforidua, on the 4th of April, 2020,” the statement, signed by Robert Klah Head, Public Events and Communications at Charterhouse said.

The statement explained that postponement has “become necessary due to the recently confirmed Covid 19 cases in Ghana, and the National Directives on Public Gathering. A new date will be announced later, subject to further National Directives on Public Gathering.”

“Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted. We would like to use this opportunity to remind the general public to follow the preventive measures issued by the Ghana Health Service, and comply with Government’s recent directives on Public Gathering, which are aimed at preventing the spread of the virus,” Charterhouse added.

So far, Ghana has confirmed seven cases of COVID-19 and as part of cautionary measures; President Akufo-Addo, on Sunday, announced the closure of schools and universities and also the ban on public gatherings.

Already, many institutions have responded to the president’s call with churches suspending church services and other activities like weddings and Easter conventions.
