Staff of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) joined other workers’ unions at this year’s May Day celebrations in a striking show of discontent over the national broadcaster’s current state, especially the continuous presence of the Director-General, Professor Amin Alhassan.
Gathered at Black Star Square in Accra, GBC employees, participated in a vibrant parade organised by the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
They carried placards, aimed squarely at President John Mahama, expressing deep dissatisfaction with what they described as the collapse of the Corporation under the leadership of Director-General Prof Alhassan.
The protesting workers, used the occasion to draw national attention to the many challenges confronting the state broadcaster, attributing them to poor leadership and alleged inaction by both Prof. Alhassan and the National Media Commission (NMC).
Placards bore pointed messages such as: “GBC is collapsing under Prof. Amin Alhassan,” “Mr President, sack Professor Amin Alhassan now – we are suffering,” and “Professor Amin, your contract ended on 1st October 2023 – return to the lecture hall.”
Others urged the President to act against the NMC, with signs that read: “Mr President, the NMC is no longer relevant – dissolve it,” and “Mr President, prosecute former NMC Chairman, Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo.”
The demonstration brought an added layer of urgency to this year’s May Day observance, as workers not only raised concerns about general labour conditions, but also issued a clarion call for decisive action to safeguard the future of a vital national institution.
The direct appeals to the Presidency, signaled mounting frustration within the GBC workforce and a demand for immediate intervention in the Corporation’s management and governance.
