DWM celebrates 43 years of empowering Ghanaian women

Developing Women for Mobilization (DWM), formerly known as the 31st December Women’s Movement, marked a significant milestone as it celebrated its 43rd anniversary on Thursday, May 15.

The event commemorates more than four decades of tireless commitment to the empowerment, advancement, and upliftment of women across Ghana and beyond.

What began as a bold vision has grown into a transformative force, shaping the socio-economic and political landscape for women. Over the past four decades, DWM has worked to amplify women’s voices, break down systemic barriers, and advocate for equality and dignity.

The organization has been instrumental in championing women’s rights, providing education and skills training, supporting economic independence, and fostering leadership among women from all walks of life.

In a statement issued to commemorate the anniversary, DWM expressed heartfelt gratitude to all who have contributed to the movement’s journey — from the pioneers who laid its foundation, to the dedicated team that continues to drive its mission, and the countless women whose strength and resilience fuel its progress.

“We salute the trailblazers who helped to lay the foundation, the tireless team who carried the mission forward and continue to do so, and the countless women whose courage and strength fuel our journey,” the statement read.

The anniversary celebration is not only a moment of reflection but also a recommitment to the principles that have sustained the organization: equality, opportunity, and the unwavering belief in the potential of every woman. DWM reaffirmed its dedication to continue advocating for a future where women are equally represented, respected, and empowered.

“To our members, well-wishers, supporters, and partners we say ‘Ayekoo’. We dreamt it, we planned it, and we executed it,” the statement continued.

As Ghana joins DWM in celebrating this milestone, the message is clear: though much has been achieved, the journey towards full gender equality continues — and it is one that DWM is determined to lead with purpose and pride.
