ECOWAS Heads of State and Government have unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama as the region’s sole candidate for African Union chairperson in 2027, clearing the way for his eventual assumption of the continental leadership role.
The endorsement follows the adoption of a resolution by the ECOWAS Ministerial Council, which was unanimously backed by regional leaders. The decision removes all regional hurdles and positions Mahama as the chairperson-in-waiting when the AU’s rotating leadership reaches West Africa.

President Mahama expressed deep appreciation to his peers for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to meet the high expectations of the continent. He assured leaders of his commitment to advancing Africa’s shared interests and strengthening continental unity.
