Pressure group Election Watch Ghana has urged the country’s election-management body to address the alarming incidence of vote buying around the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries on Saturday, January 31.
“Our findings show that serious candidates are allocating substantial resources, reportedly between GH¢150-200 million cash to influence delegates’ decision through lavish offers, including hotel accommodations, transportation, feeding, and per diems.”
In a statement issued on Thursday, January 29, Election Watch Ghana noted that the integrity of the exercise is under threat as “candidates with deep pockets threaten to undermine the will of the people”.
Signed by convenors Mark Ewusi Arkoh and Jude Balma, the statement said the phenomenon not only compromises the fairness of the exercise but also jeopardises the unity and stability of the NPP and the nation as a whole.
“We urge the Electoral Commission (EC) to take immediate action to address these irregularities and ensure a level playing field for all candidates.”
The group provided a toll-free number of the EC for citizens to report cases of vote buying.
“The EC must uphold the highest standards of professionalism and impartiality, including ensuring that its officials are not compromised by accepting gifts or favours from candidates.”
It urged stakeholders to prioritise the integrity of every electoral process and work towards a free, fair and transparent election.
