The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) is cautioning all importers, manufacturers, supermarket operators and retailers to strictly comply with its regulations as the festive season approaches.
Festive seasons are usually characterised with merry making with most people going all out to shop.
It is on the back of this that the FDA is cautioning the public and traders to be mindful of food items bought and those sold on the market.
In a statement dated November 7, 2018, the FDA warned traders particularly to desist from selling unregistered products to consumers.
Consumers are also cautioned to be on the lookout for goods without appropriate labels in order not to purchase expired or unwholesome products.
The FDA cautioned consumers to be mindful of products with damaged packaging such as dented canned products, bloated canned products, rusted canned products as well as products that are not kept under good storage conditions.
Traders within the food industry are expected to refrain from trading products with lapsed expiry dates.
The Authority noted that strict actions will be taken against traders and business owners who will be found culpable of trading unwholesome products.
“Businesses whose activities will expose the public to risk will be subjected to strict regulatory sanctions, including closure of premises and prosecution.”
The FDA has therefore given the public the mandate to report persons selling expired or unwholesome products.
