The Greater Accra Regional Directorate of the Ghana School Feeding Programme is providing 85 per cent schools in the Region with free food under the President’s initiative to give free food to junior high schools due to the coronavirus.
The Programme is currently serving free food to 111,385 JHS students in the Region, from Monday to Friday.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his 16th address on Sunday, August 30 announced that all JHS students resuming school should be given one hot meal a day.
Final year JHS students are already enjoying the meals with second-year students expected to enjoy from Monday, October 5 when they resume.
The Regional Coordinator, Christiana L. Nkansah, in an interview on Onua FM’s Ghana Dadwene on Sunday explained that GH¢3.50 is being spent on each student daily.
“We are about 100% complete in providing food to all schools in the Region. We are about 85% complete to serving all the schools in the Region,” Madam Nkansah told host Nana Yaw Opare.
The Coordinator explained that “there are 797 public schools and 2,362 private schools that are benefiting from the free food programme in the Region”.
“There are 56,673 public schools candidates and 57,712 candidates in private schools. Ashaiman and Dansoman are leading areas with more private schools,” she explained.
Madam Nkansah added that “these include teachers and non-teaching staffs. Securities and cleaners are all served”.
She explained that “some schools are not covered under the programme because they were not under the school feeding prgrammes but the office is working to cover all the schools in the Region.
Quality food
The Coordinator said almost all the caterers are cooking healthy food for the children because they have monitoring team in all the schools.
