GCB Bank has been named the official collecting bank for the Ghana Sports Fund, a key national initiative aimed at mobilising sustainable financing to support the country’s sporting sector. The announcement was made during a brief press conference at the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, attended by Minister Kofi Edi Adams, National Sports Authority Board Chairman Dr. Alfred Awaah, members of the Ghana Sports Fund Board, and representatives from GCB Bank.
The fund, established under provisions of the National Sports Fund Bill, is designed to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in managing resources intended for sports development. It will provide financial backing for athlete welfare, grassroots programmes, sports infrastructure, and Ghana’s participation in regional and international competitions.
Minister Adams expressed confidence in GCB Bank’s ability to manage the initiative effectively. “The bank has demonstrated readiness not only to operate within Ghana’s sports financing landscape but to optimise every opportunity for the Fund’s success,” he said.
Board Chairman of the Ghana Sports Fund, Professor Koryoe Anim-Wright, emphasised the importance of the partnership. “Strong collaborations are crucial in establishing a solid foundation for this initiative,” he said. “We are delighted with GCB Bank’s interest and commitment and will work closely to ensure the Fund meets its objectives.”
Dr. Awaah highlighted the oversight role of the National Sports Authority, noting that there are more than 50 federations and associations that will benefit from the Fund. “This initiative is a major step forward in addressing the funding challenges faced by sporting federations,” he said. “It will help cover manpower planning, infrastructure, travel, and other operational needs.”
The Ghana Sports Fund, through its collaboration with GCB Bank, aims to provide a reliable, transparent mechanism to ensure that resources reach athletes and federations efficiently. Sports stakeholders have welcomed the move, seeing it as a long-awaited solution to financial constraints that have hampered the growth of the country’s sporting ecosystem.
Reporting from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, this partnership marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s efforts to strengthen sports development nationwide.
