The Ghana Education Service (GES) has stepped up efforts to ensure school meals support learners’ health and academic performance. Director-General Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, alongside the Chair of the GES Council, Prof. Mawutor Avoke, and management team members, have conducted unannounced visits to selected schools across several regions in recent weeks.
The visits aim to evaluate critical aspects of the school feeding programme, including:
- Hygienic conditions under which meals are prepared.
- Quality and nutritional value of food served to students.
- Feedback from students, teachers, and kitchen staff on potential improvements.
“These surprise assessments allow management to obtain real-time, on-the-ground information, which is vital for policy decisions and strengthening the feeding system,” a GES statement noted.
Good nutrition is widely recognized as essential for mental development, concentration, and overall academic success, making the school feeding programme a cornerstone of Ghana’s educational strategy.

GES has pledged to continue these inspections periodically to ensure that every learner receives wholesome, safe meals, fostering healthy, well-nourished students ready to maximize learning opportunities.
“At GES, we remain committed to creating safe, supportive, and nourishing learning environments for all learners across the country,” the statement concluded.
The ongoing oversight underscores the government’s dedication to improving educational outcomes by linking nutrition directly to learning effectiveness.
