The Government of Ghana on Wednesday deported three Israeli nationals after what officials described as the ill-treatment and unjustified deportation of three Ghanaian citizens by Israeli authorities earlier this week.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the action follows the detention and removal of three Ghanaians who were turned away upon arrival at Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport. Ghanaian officials say the individuals were mistreated without just cause, prompting a swift and reciprocal response.
The three Israelis, who arrived in Ghana earlier Wednesday, were deported “in direct response to the unacceptable treatment” of Ghanaian travellers, the statement said.
With the Israeli Ambassador currently outside the country, the Chargé d’Affaires ad Interim of the Israeli Embassy in Accra was urgently summoned to the Ministry for explanations. Ghanaian authorities said both sides have since agreed to pursue an amicable resolution to de-escalate tensions.
Despite the diplomatic friction, Ghana emphasized that the country remains committed to maintaining constructive relations with Israel and other partners.
“The Government of Ghana will continue to safeguard the dignity of its nationals and also that of other nationals,” the statement read, adding that Ghana expects its citizens to be treated with the same respect abroad that it extends to foreign nationals within its borders.
Officials say further engagements between the two governments are expected as part of efforts to restore normalcy and reaffirm long-standing bilateral ties.
