Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to Africa’s reparations agenda following high-level discussions in Accra.
Mr Ablakwa on Wednesday, January 8, 2026, met with the Director of the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana, Professor Samuel A. Ntewusu, to deliberate on advancing reparations and reparative justice on the continent. The meeting focused on aligning Ghana’s efforts with the African Union’s Theme of the Year, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.”
The talks come amid growing continental momentum after the African Union’s 7th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting in July 2025 agreed to extend the reparations agenda over a 10-year period, from 2026 to 2036. President John Dramani Mahama has been designated the African Union Champion on Reparations, underscoring Ghana’s central role in driving the initiative.
Officials said the engagement reflects a renewed push to deepen scholarly, diplomatic and policy coordination around historical justice for Africans and the global African diaspora.
