The Ghana Football Association released fixtures for the upcoming Ghana Premier League season on Thursday, October 8 evening and as expected, it came with interesting pairings including exciting local derby games.
There is nothing more exciting than a derby game in the Ghana Premier League.
As usual the 2020-2021 league season will have some games between neighbours which will come with intense rivalry and controversies which will remain memorable in the minds of the fans.
3Sports takes you through games that will be fiery between neighbours.
Berekum Chelsea vs Aduana Stars – Bono Derby
Located at the Brong Ahafo Region, these two teams have won three league titles between them in the last two decades.
Fixtures between them comes with intense rivalry as each one of them tries to prove to be the face of the region in terms of football.
This season’s clash will come off on week 6 and week 23.
Bechem United vs Berekum Chelsea – Bono Derby
Both teams are located in the Bono Ahafo Region and is always intense anytime they play against each other.
It all started when Berekum Chelsea (then Bechem Chelsea) moved from Bechem to Berekum after they had qualified to the Ghanaian Premier League some years back. This decision forms part of the reasons why Bechem United decided to push to the topflight.
Chief Executive Officer of Berekum Chelsea Obed Nana Kwame Nketsiah slapped his goalkeeper Gideon Ahenkorah during this fixture in 2019 for allegedly taking bribe to allow them loose 3-1 at home during the Normalization Special Tournament.
The fiery clash will come off on week 12 and 29.
Asante Kotoko vs King Faisal – Kumasi Derby
Kumasi Asante Kotoko vs King Faisal Babies is the Kumasi Derby. The later gained national attention when they put up a solid performance in the 2000’s where they were representing Ghana at continental level.
Bankroller of King Faisal Babies, Alhaji Karim Grusah makes this tie more interesting with his media interactions and jibes at Kotoko.
Week 15 and 32 will see these two sides facing each other.
AshantiGold SC vs Asante Kotoko
A clash between these two sides is a clash between the two most successful clubs in the Ashanti Region and it is always tensed with bragging rights always at stake.
This season’s ties have been scheduled at Week 11 and week 28.
Ebusua Dwarfs vs Elmina Sharks – Fante Derby
The decline of Venomous Vipers and the establishment of Elmina Sharks by business man Dr Papa Kwesi Ndoum meant the Fante Derby was going to be between Ebusua Dwarfs and Elmina Sharks for a while.
Both teams are located in a coastal community and anytime they clash in the league turns out to be a big game.
This season’s games will be played on Week 1 and Week 18.
Great Olympics vs Hearts of Oak – Mantse Derby
The argument as to who the proper owners of the Ga land starts anytime Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics takes to the field to battle and the 2020-2021 season won’t be anything different.
Games will be played on week 11 and 28.
Karela United vs Medeama SC – Western Derby
The two young clubs have no choice than to step in the big shoes of two falling giants from the Western Region; Hasaacas and Eleven Wise to compete in the Western Region derby.
This season’s Western Regional Derby will be played on match week 11 and match week 28.
