ECOWAS ministers have formally endorsed Ghana’s bid for the 2027 Chairmanship of the African Union, adopting a unified recommendation during the Ninety-Fifth Ordinary Session of the Council of Ministers held on December 12 in Abuja.
The decision, captured in Recommendation C/REC.1/12/25, urges the Authority of Heads of State and Government to approve a declaration backing Ghana’s candidacy. The move positions the regional bloc to present a coordinated front as AU leadership elections approach.
The Council cited multiple reasons for the endorsement, including Ghana’s longstanding contributions to ECOWAS and its role in strengthening the region’s international profile. Ministers also emphasized the importance of securing influential positions within continental and global institutions to advance West Africa’s strategic interests.
According to the Council, supporting Ghana aligns with broader efforts to boost the presence of ECOWAS member states and nationals within international organizations. Strengthening this representation, they noted, is essential for safeguarding the bloc’s priorities in regional decision-making spaces.
The endorsement reflects the Council’s commitment to collective diplomacy, urging member states to vote in favor of Ghana when AU leadership ballots are cast in 2027. The recommendation underscores the bloc’s determination to act cohesively in matters of high-level political support.
The session concluded with the adoption of the recommendation, signed by H.E. Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba, Chair of the Council of Ministers.
If approved by ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, the declaration would formalize a region-wide commitment to promoting Ghana’s candidacy on the continental stage, marking a significant step in West Africa’s coordinated engagement with the African Union.
