The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adam, on behalf of the Republic of Ghana, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) and Ghana Athletics to officially confirm Ghana as host of the 24th CAA African Senior Athletics Championships.
The continental championship is scheduled to take place from 12th to 17th May, 2026, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, Legon, Accra.
The signing ceremony was held at the Ministry of Sports and Recreation Conference Room in Accra and was witnessed by a high-powered delegation from the Confederation of African Athletics, led by the CAA President, Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, and the CAA Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Lamine Fati. Also present was the CAA Region Two delegation, led by Chief Tonobok Okowa.
Executives of Ghana Athletics, headed by its President, Bawah Fuseini, were in attendance, alongside representatives of the Ghana Olympic Committee, led by Lawyer Richard Akpokavie, and the National Sports Authority, represented by the Deputy Director General (Technical), Veronica Commey. Several other key institutions and stakeholders were also present, all expressing optimism for a successful championship.
The signing of the MoU between the CAA, Ghana Athletics, and the Government of Ghana—represented by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation—formally signifies Ghana’s acceptance and commitment to host the prestigious African athletics event in 2026.

Earlier in the day, delegations from the Confederation of African Athletics and Ghana Athletics paid courtesy calls on the National Sports Authority, the Ghana Olympic Committee, and the University of Ghana, Legon Sports Directorate, as part of engagements toward preparations for the championship.
The 24th CAA African Senior Athletics Championships are expected to bring together top athletes from across the continent, further reinforcing Ghana’s reputation as a destination for major international sporting events.
