The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has presented medical consumables worth 10,000 cedis to the Tamale Central Prison, and additional 4,000 cedis to be used to complete an ongoing project.
The inmates and officers on duty were also giving free medical screening and lunch.
The gesture, according to the association, forms part of activities marking the 61st annual conference of the association, which is expected to end on Sunday November 10.
Presenting the items to officers of the prison, President of GMA, Dr. Frank Ankobia expressed concerns about the health status of inmates in prisons across the country.
He said, though the prisoners are serving sentences for crimes committed, their health should be a concern to the nation.
“It is in view of this that the GMA this year chose the theme ‘the health of prisoners and other vulnerable groups in Ghana; the realities and expectations’”
Dr Ankobia observed that the prison is a place one does not plan to be, but some people often find themselves there.
He assured the Prison Service that the GMA will continue to support them when the need arise.
The Council Chair of the Prison Service, Most Rev. Peter Paul applauded the efforts of GMA.
He said prisoners go through a lot of challenges, especially with their health needs.
He appealed to other benevolent organizations, particularly the GMA, not to relent in its efforts in support government and the Prisons Service to cater for inmates.
