In a decisive action against illegal gold trading, the Ghana GoldBod Taskforce has gained attention by carrying out a major operation in Asankragua, a town located in the Western region of Ghana.
The regulatory agency detained ten Chinese nationals suspected of gold smuggling, marking a crucial moment in the battle against unlawful trade and resource exploitation in the nation.

The operation was a careful sting, demonstrating the dedication and accuracy of the GoldBod Taskforce.

In total, authorities confiscated an impressive 1.3 kilograms of gold, worth around 1.4 million cedis, along with 1.3 million cedis in cash and a variety of casino cards. The items recovered indicate a possible connection to organized crime and money laundering, raising concerns about the extent of illegal activities within Ghana’s gold sector.

Speaking to the media shortly after the operation, Sammy Gyamfi (Esq.), the Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, highlighted the board’s commitment to enforcing the GoldBod Act 1140. This important law explicitly forbids foreigners from participating in local gold trading, aimed at protecting Ghanaian miners and strengthening the economy.

The CEO stressed the necessity of adhering to the law to protect the nation’s resources from exploitation.

“Today marks a significant step in our fight against illegal gold trading,” Gyamfi stated. “We will not accept any person or group that attempts to undermine our laws and exploit our resources. The GoldBod Taskforce is dedicated to safeguarding our gold from illegal exploitation, and we will hold accountable anyone who circumvents our regulations.”

This operation represents a significant change in Ghana’s approach to illegal gold trading, which has long posed a threat to the nation’s wealth and the livelihoods of numerous local miners and businesses.

The arrest of the Chinese nationals also conveys a strong message: the time of unchecked smuggling is coming to a close.
