The government has set the wheels in motion for the establishment of the second Gas Processing Plant (GPP11) in Ghana with a whopping price tag of $400 million.
Finance and Energy Ministers, Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson and John Jinapor, have joined forces to inaugurate the Implementation Committee that will oversee this significant project.
Led by Deputy Energy Minister Richard Gyan-Mensah, the Committee has been given a strict deadline of four weeks to finalize the implementation plan.
This new gas processing plant aims to alleviate the strain on the current Atuabo Gas Processing Plant in Ghana’s Western Region and reduce dependence on the West African Gas Pipeline in Nigeria.
Unlike the previous administration’s approach, this project under the Mahama government is set to be financed solely by the Government of Ghana (GoG).
Former President John Mahama’s administration sees this project as a flagship initiative, taking over from the previous government which failed to turn plans into action.
The idea for a second gas plant dates back to the late President John Evans Atta Mills, and under President Mahama, plans were set in motion following the successful completion of the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant.
The commencement of the GPP II project has been long-awaited, with the current government expected to save a significant amount on costly liquid fuels for electricity generation.
With the promise of creating over 1,000 jobs and saving millions of dollars for the country, the importance of the GPP II cannot be overstated.
Dr. Ato Forson expressed urgency for the project, highlighting the financial burden of relying on expensive liquid fuels and pointing out the potential savings from the new Gas Processing Plant.
With a deadline set for the committee to deliver on their implementation plan, the government is determined to see this project through to completion and revolutionize the country’s energy security and economic stability.
