President John Dramani Mahama has announced that three new technical universities will be established as part of efforts to advance technical education in Ghana.

He also indicated that three new public universities will be established in Kintampo in the Bono East Region, Jasikan in the Oti Region and Damongo in the Savannah Region.

“To expand access to higher education and support balanced regional growth and meet the rising demand for quality tertiary education, we have entered international partnerships to establish two new public universities,” he said in Parliament as he delivered the state-of-the-nation address.

“I’m happy to announce also that grants has been sourced from China to establish new public university in Damongo in the Savannah Region.”

He highlighted the importance of technical education, announcing the establishment of three new ones in the country.

“Technical universities play a critical role in closing the skills gap and reducing youth unemployment by delivering high quality industry-aligned and practice-oriented training within a broader policy framework that stimulates labour demand.

“In this regard, government is going to establish three new technical universities to strengthen skills development, enhance innovation, and support national industrialisation efforts.”

These were the highlights of President Mahama’s address in the area of education.

He said while attending to the needs at the higher education level, six new Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centers of excellence across the country “to equip our young people with practical skills”.

He also announced a review of national curriculum for TVET education in Ghana.

“This will make TVET education more adaptive and resilient.”
