Musician Guru has attributed his inability to be recognized by Charterhouse Productions Limited, organizers of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs), to his association with legendary rapper Obrafuor and Empire Entertainment owned by Nathaniel Kwabena Anokye Adisi, popularly known as Bola Ray.
Guru explained in an interview with Giovani Caleb on the 3FM Drive that he did a song with Obrafuor titled ‘Kasie Bo’, a song, he said, analyzed the whole music and entertainment industry in Ghana.
In that song, he said, they stepped on the toes of some big event organizers including Charterhouse and that may be the reason behind his inability to be nominated for awards, apart from the one he won for ‘Boys Abre’ song.
He suspects that he is being punished for that.
In the case of Bola Ray, he said, he joined Empire Entertainment and performed during one of the Ghana Meets Naija events organized by the company.
But, he said, because Empire Entertainment and Charterhouse are both event organizers and are into competition, the latter may have decided not have anything to do with him.
These he anticipates to be the reasons for his inability to win an award in spite of the sterling performances he has put up in the past.
“I have done what I could to get nominated and the people of Ghana can attest to this but I think my problem is my partnership with Obrafuor that gave me a problem especially with the Kasiebo song.
“That song talked about the whole industry and that affected some big people in the industry. Some of them felt disrespected. This is another thing that deprived me the awards.
He, then, pointed out: “Another one was when I went to Empire Entertainment. Bola Ray was one of the big brands for holding awards and events and they were also competing with Chatterhouse. Ghana Meets Naija is an event that Chatterhouse [thought of] doing something of that kind. So you being an artiste under the record label gave me another problem.
“So they never recognized me until ‘Boys Abre’ song that had an award and even when I received that ward, back stage one of the key members of the Charterhouse told me they were done with me.”
