The Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service, in collaboration with GIZ, has launched a renewed push to strengthen patient self-care through technology with the hosting of the AYA Innovation Challenge, an event aimed at encouraging homegrown solutions to rising non-communicable diseases.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Dr. Hafez Adam Taher said the theme, “Designing the Future of Patient Self-Care,” reflects the country’s urgent need to empower Ghanaians to manage their health more proactively. He noted that cases of Type 2 diabetes and hypertension are increasing nationwide, making innovative self-care tools more essential than ever. Dr. Taher commended the AYA Innovation Challenge for promoting ideas that strengthen collaboration between patients and the health system.

The Public Health Director of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe, also stressed the need for new and efficient approaches to curb the rising morbidity and mortality linked to non-communicable diseases. He said Ghana must adopt smarter strategies that improve early detection, management and long-term outcomes.

This year’s event featured software developers and innovators presenting digital solutions designed to support individuals living with chronic illnesses. The pitches focused on improving treatment adherence, remote monitoring, patient education and seamless communication with health professionals.

A panel comprising representatives from the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service and GIZ evaluated the submissions. The winning innovation will receive funding and technical guidance to help integrate the solution into the national health system, a move officials say will accelerate Ghana’s ambition to scale locally developed digital health technologies.

Organizers described the AYA Innovation Challenge as a key step toward building a more resilient, patient-centered health landscape capable of meeting the country’s growing non-communicable disease burden.
