The Bono East Regional Police Command of the Ghana Police Service has returned a bag containing GH¢85,000 to its rightful owner after officers discovered it lying by the roadside along the Techiman–Kumasi highway, authorities said.
Police reported that at about 04:20 on February 14, officers on duty at a snap checkpoint noticed an unattended bag believed to have fallen from a moving vehicle. The bag bore the name “Ofori” and a telephone number written on it, prompting officers to secure it and alert their superiors.
The team, led by Inspector George Appiah, inspected the bag and discovered it contained a large sum of cash. Following procedure, they handed it over to the regional command for verification and investigation.
Using the number on the bag, police contacted a 53-year-old businessman, Stephen Ofori, who resides in Ashtown. He subsequently reported to the checkpoint and identified himself as the owner.
Mr Ofori told officers the money had been withdrawn from GCB Bank in Wa and was being transported to Kumasi aboard a commercial vehicle when it was accidentally lost in transit.
Police said the amount was counted and verified in the presence of the claimant and confirmed to be GH¢85,000. After what officials described as satisfactory explanation and due verification, the cash was formally handed back to him.
In a statement, the command commended the professionalism of the officers involved and members of the public who drew attention to the bag, noting that honesty and vigilance remain essential to effective community policing.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to safeguarding property and urged travellers transporting valuables to take extra precautions to prevent similar incidents.
