Police in Ghana’s Ashanti Region have launched an investigation into an attack on officers during a routine patrol at Jacobu, authorities said.
According to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, the incident occurred on 23 January 2026 at Bepotenten Sukuum, where a Jacobu District patrol team had been carrying out routine duties. Officers reportedly recovered a pump-action gun from a 15-year-old boy and directed him to ask the owner of the weapon to report to the police station with the necessary documentation.
Police said that while the patrol team was returning, they were confronted by a large group of civilians who blocked the road. The crowd, estimated at about 100 people, was allegedly armed with cutlasses and firearms. Officers were assaulted during the confrontation, and a service rifle was seized by one of the assailants.
In the ensuing clash, police said the individual who took the rifle was shot, while another person sustained injuries. The stolen service weapon was later recovered by officers.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command said investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest those involved in the attack. It again warned the public against assaulting law enforcement officers, stressing that anyone found responsible would be pursued and made to face the full rigours of the law.
