Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central Constituency Kennedy Ohene Agyapong on Monday, September 28 failed to show up in court in the contempt case filed against him by Justice Amos Wunter Wuni.
According to lawyers of the outspoken MP, he suffered from complications of the post-Covid-19 condition he suffered last month.
Lead counsel Kwame Gyan told the Accra High Court that arrangement was, as a result, made to have the lawmaker get treated by a doctor.
Ken Agyapong is facing contempt charges after he was accused by Justice Wuni of making statements that scandalized the court.
The case was first called in court on Monday, September 14 but was adjourned after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP had said he had not received any summon to appear before the court.
There was a substituted service and fresh charges were levelled against him.
He was asked to reappear four days later, precisely on Friday, September 18, 2020.
But his lawyers filed an application at the Supreme Court to prohibit the High Court from sitting on the case.
The lawyers also filed an order of certiorari to further quash the High Court’s summons issued to question the lawmaker on why he should not be punished for scandalising the Court.
But Justice Wunter Wuni adjourned the case to Friday, September 25, insisting the lawmaker was contemptuous in his pronouncements on Net 2 Television on Wednesday, September 2.
Mr Agyapong escalated the issue by petitioning the Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, to bar Justice Wunter Wuni from proceeding with the case on possible bias.
But his charge was read and a guilty plea entered for him while the case was adjourned to Monday, September 28.
On Monday, after he was told about Mr Agyapong’s ill-health, the High Court judge adjourned hearing to Thursday, October 1.
He also ordered the doctor to appear before the court to explain his report.
