The hashtag #PrayForKotoko now tops the list of issues trending in Ghana on Twitter

Messages of support and well wishes have started pouring in for members of the Kumasi Asante Kotoko football club involved in a tragic accident Wednesday night on the Accra-Kumasi highway.

Players and officials of the team were returning to Kumasi after their Wednesday’s match day 22 Premier game with Inter Allies in Accra when the accident occured at about 9:45pm, the team confirmed.

It is unclear the nature of injuries suffered by team members but confirmed reports suggest one official member of the team has died Thursday though the management had earlier tweeted earlier that “personnel on the bus are generally fine”.

Ahead of official public statement by the management of the team, President Akufo-Addo, some Ghanaian footballers and clubs have taken to Twitter to express sadness about the tragic incident and wished the victims well.

Saddened by the news of the accident involving players & officials of Kotoko. My heart goes out to the team; speedy recovery to the injured.

Kotoko’s arch rival, Accra Hearts of Oak, has since the incident changed its Twitter account name to #PrayForKotoko, something that has been described as a show of maturity.
