Mahama hosts Africa Health Summit in Accra Today

The president of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama is set to host a pivotal Africa Health Sovereignty Summit in Accra on August 5, with the objective of redefining global health governance and positioning Africa as a leader in driving its own health reforms.

The summit is expected to mark a critical turning point in how the continent responds to health challenges and shapes international health policies that impact its people.

Themed “African Health Sovereignty in a Reimagined Global Health Governance Architecture,” the summit will bring together a high-level gathering of African Heads of State, global health experts, policymakers, and development partners.

Together, they will deliberate on bold, Africa-led strategies aimed at shifting the balance of health power toward the continent and ending decades of structural dependency.

In a statement signed by Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, it was announced that the summit will formally launch The Accra Initiative.

This action-driven framework is designed to realign the global health governance system in a way that reflects African realities and priorities. The initiative aims to place African voices and leadership at the center of decision-making processes that have, for far too long, been dominated by external institutions and interests.

One of the major outcomes expected from the summit is the formation of a Presidential High-Level Panel that will be mandated to design a new roadmap for reforming global health governance.

This roadmap is anticipated to offer practical and strategic solutions that address the long-standing exclusion of Africa from global health leadership roles and ensure that the continent is better positioned to lead its own health agenda.

In addition, the summit will see the introduction of the Sustain Initiative, which will focus on promoting sustainable, investment-led, and country-driven health systems.

This initiative encourages African governments to rely more on domestic resources while leveraging strategic partnerships to strengthen their national health infrastructure. It represents a paradigm shift away from donor-driven models toward more resilient and self-reliant systems.

Another key highlight of the summit will be the adoption of the Accra Compact, a visionary agreement that will articulate Africa’s shared commitment to achieving health sovereignty and securing a fairer global health order.

The Compact is expected to serve as a blueprint for long-term collaboration among African nations and with global actors, advocating for reforms that address inequities in access to healthcare, medical innovation, and emergency preparedness.

Speaking ahead of the summit, President Mahama stressed the urgency of overhauling the global health system, which he described as outdated and unresponsive to Africa’s demographic and economic realities.

He emphasized that the time has come for Africa to assume full control over its health future through collective leadership and coordinated action.

“Africa must take charge of its health destiny, not in isolation, but through determined, coordinated action… reshaping the rules that govern global health, rules that must reflect the voices and realities of our people.” Mahama said.

Mahama pointed to the COVID-19 pandemic as a wake-up call that laid bare the weaknesses and inequalities of the current system.

From unequal vaccine distribution to broken supply chains and limited access to life-saving technologies, the pandemic highlighted how Africa continues to be disadvantaged under the existing global health order.

With international attention turning to Accra, preparations for the summit are intensifying. Delegations from across the continent and beyond have confirmed their participation, while development partners and health advocates anticipate a renewed wave of momentum for structural change.

The summit is expected to be more than just a conference, it will be a declaration of intent, a moment where Africa rises to claim its rightful place at the table of global health governance.

As President Mahama leads this bold initiative, the world will be watching closely.
