President John Dramani Mahama has expressed appreciation to transport unions for holding off on increasing fares in the face of fuel price surges precipitated by the escalating Middle East conflict.
Speaking at the Kwahu Business Forum in Mpraeso in the Eastern Region on Saturday, April 4, President Mahama described the “patience” of the transport unions as a vital lifeline for millions of Ghanaians who depend on public transport daily.
“I want to express my sincere gratitude to the transport unions for their patience and understanding,” he stated.
“We did not anticipate this situation, but they have held off on increasing fares.”
The President expressed confidence that the unions will continue to exercise restraint as government works on possible mitigating measures to cushion consumers.
“I am confident they will continue to exercise restraint as we work together to improve the situation,” the President said.
He revealed that an emergency cabinet meeting will be held on measures to cushion Ghanaians.
“I have called for this emergency cabinet meeting to decide on specific measures we can take to cushion petroleum prices.
“There are adjustments we can make, particularly in the margins, to help maintain relatively stable prices as we pray for the war to cease.”
